The Zugunruhe Mastery Guide and Programs

Zugunruhe Hummingbird

Collaboration Expands our Contribution

Paul Werder founded LionHeart Consulting Inc. in 1983. Paul has a strong track record of successfully implementing organizational change and improving the culture and financial performance of businesses and non-profit organizations. He has worked with numerous organizations and leaders who focus on sustainability. The Fowler Center for Sustainable Value at Case Western Reserve University has appointed Paul to serve as a Distinguished Fellow to research and recommend the best means of integrating spirituality into their curriculum as an "essential component of the Center's mission."

Zugunruhe (pronounced zoo gen ROO ha) is the German word for the "migratory restlessness" that describes the behavioral changes in many species prior to a journey central to their survival. Many of us who are sensitive to our planet's environmental dangers have awakened to a cultural restlessness that precedes necessary and inevitable change.

In his book, Zugunruhe, Jason F. McLennan states, "Profound change requires deep personal effectiveness that is not taught in our schools or is rarely discussed in the environmental and green building movement." Now, more than ever before, thoughtful people are looking to embark on a transformational journey to expand their contributions as leaders.

The Zugunruhe Mastery Guide addresses challenges of personal effectiveness through the exploration and development of a series of core competencies -- each punctuated by Gwersi (essence lessons) selected from McLennan's Zugunruhe to further articulate the fundamental nature of each competency.

Accompanied by our workshops, webinars and annual retreat, the Zugunruhe Mastery Guide is a comprehensive program that will provide you with the leadership competencies you have been looking for -- so you can make your complete contribution to the world that needs you at your best.

Mastery does not mean perfection. Mastery occurs when you have unconscious access to the competencies you need when you need them. Similar to an aikido master, the Zugunruhe Master is one who has surrendered himself or herself to a lifetime of service, discipline, and excellence. The Zugunruhe Mastery Guide is designed to cultivate access to the attributes that exist within the heart of every human being so that he or she can find the wisdom and courage necessary for effective leadership.

Who the Zugunruhe Mastery Guide is for...

Are you a talented person who has brief, unpleasant moments that get the better of you?

Do you get frustrated that people don't always listen to or respect your professional expertise?

Do you avoid conversations you know you need to have with people, who aren't working with you effectively?

Do you have trouble sleeping at night, stressing out over repetitive problems that you can never really escape from?

Has your natural enthusiasm for your career been replaced with a dread feeling in your gut?

You want to make a difference, contribute, and have your work mean something. Yet we get worn down by the routine, get stopped short of our goals, and sometimes let obstacles diminish our hope and enthusiasm. When the urgent takes over, what's most important gets compromised, and your heart withers, longing for what you don't really believe is possible. We often call these experiences "business as usual," but they are really signs that a more effective set of tools and a strong dose of heartfelt inspiration is necessary. To be sure, the sustainability movement is a daunting undertaking, but fewer people have fulfilled even more amazing dreams when their hearts are in the right place.

A Way Forward...

You can learn to become masterful even in your most challenging moments. With practice, you can unconsciously access the competencies you need to produce the results that matter to you. We know that underneath your thoughts to the contrary, you already possess the heart to do so. You can improve your performance and reduce your stress quickly if you have the right tools. To make this a whole lot easier, we have distilled what we've learned and practiced over the past 30 years down to the 10 Core Competencies every Zugunruhe Master will eventually need. We offer you these tools in a unique self-study guide, and have supportive programs to go along with the guide regardless of where you work and reside.

The 10 Competencies:

  1. Well-being and Vitality -- you can't be a change agent for sustainability without the energy and balance necessary to do your professional work and the work of personal continuous improvement. And burning yourself out is a sure sign of ineffectiveness.
  2. Accessing Inner Wisdom -- your heart is a treasure chest of virtuous qualities that can guide you through any obstacle. When we forget we have this internal guidance system, we need a practice to help us remember our highest purpose and the qualities we need to draw upon to fulfill it.
  3. Telling the Truth -- honesty is the best policy. Easy to say, hard to do when you fear the truth will only make things worse. You can learn how to respectfully speak about the things that are really important to you - without compromising your values or damaging your relationships.
  4. Impeccable Agreements -- solving the same problem over and over again indicates a lack of clear expectations and actionable agreements. When you understand and insert the elements of an effective agreement into your problem solving conversations, you will see action and better results immediately.
  5. Growing through Failure -- disappointments happen. You sometimes fall short of what you expect of yourself and others. When you face failure responsibly, learn from it, and quickly get back in the game, you accelerate your journey towards success, instead of allowing your failure to become a detour or dead end.
  6. Listening with an Open Mind -- wisdom and influence come from listening first and speaking second. When you engage others with the intention of understanding and learning rather than pushing an agenda, you will develop richer relationships and make better decisions.
  7. Holding Others Accountable -- it's frustrating when others miss their commitments. It's even more disheartening when we let the fear of confrontation diminish our standards of excellence. You can learn the art of the difficult conversation that builds trust, creates openness, and expands your mutual commitment to excellence.
  8. Transformational Problem Solving -- our toughest problems require us to dig deep for answers. You can use these problems to bring you deeper wisdom, greater confidence, and freedom from the thought patterns that have historically held you back. Each time you move through this process, you become more prepared for your next set of challenges.
  9. Moving Others to Action -- influential leaders get things done with and through others by igniting the passion that is already in everyone. When you engage the hearts and minds of your team, your colleagues, and even those with authority, you will accelerate your collaborative and creative pursuit of the best outcomes for all concerned.
  10. Achieving Results -- this is the point of the first nine competencies. You can build your capacity for sustainable success by learning to achieve the necessary results with the resources and time available. Your business model will become more resilient when you embrace a healthy approach to goal setting, continuous improvement, and strategic reinvention.
