The Oak Bay Home Hardware building has been called a 'bracingly
modern' building that reinforces
traditional notions of village- and pedestrian-scale neighbourhood
development. As a speculative commercial
development it is noteworthy for its significant commitment to
environmentally sustainable design and
construction. Completed on budget, the project features several
'green' initiatives, including:
• Development of a contaminated site.
• On-site stormwater treatment.
• Dual flush / Low flush washroom fixtures.
• Extensive daylighting of retail areas.
• The elimination of fossil fuels from the site.
• Passive shading and ventilation techniques combined with
high-efficiency HVAC systems.
• Use of renewable building materials.
