This workshop introduces an alternate approach to HVAC systems design that results in lower operational costs for building owners, improves occupant comfort, and reduces environmental impacts.

When you consider the amount of energy consumed by building mechanical systems and lighting it's easy to understand why HVAC Systems are an integral part of 'green' buildings.

As more and more municipalities, design teams adn owners aim to achieve LEED certification for their projects, energy simulation and modeling are increasingly used to ensure HVAC system designs optimise energy use and thermal comfort.

The revolution of green buildings across Canada and the US is providing the building systems engineering practice with an opportunity to use new design approaches, technology and applications to significantly reduce the impact of buildings on the environment, particularly greenhouse gas emissions.

What will you learn?

  • To recognize the principles and practices of integrated HVAC systems design, including:
    • Strategies to minimize loads
    • Strategies to size smaller HVAC systems
    • Design issues fort he naturally ventilated buildings
    • Cold climate design strategies
    • Energy modeling versus conventional sizing software
    • Modeling software and strategies
  • Examples and case studies of succesful applications of systems which reduce operational costs
  • Best practices in North America and how to apply these principles in real-life situations
  • Be aware of key questions and challenges for design teams
  • LEED points that relate to HVAC system design, including energy and IEQ
  • More about the costs of designing in an integrated manner, including capital cost and design fee implications
