Topic: Modeling of Ground Source Heat Pumps
Speaker: Xiaobing Liu, ClimateMaster Inc.
Integrated with an advanced vertical borehole field heat transfer model, heat pump library, and ground/grout thermal properties database, the widely accepted building energy analysis program - eQUEST/DOE-2.2 becomes a powerful tool in the design and energy analysis of ground source heat pump systems. In this presentation, the newly enhanced GSHP simulation features of eQUEST/DOE-2.2 will be presented, including:
- g-function based algorithm for modeling vertical ground loop heat exchanger (VGLHE);
- dedicated wizard interface and built-in help/design tips/databases for specifying VGLHE;
- add-on feature for selecting water-to-air heat pump from equipment libraries provided by heat pump manufacturer;
- capability for modeling water-to-air heat pump with staged capacity and air flow.
An simulation-based design process for GSHP system, which is facilitated with eQUEST/DOE-2.2, will be demonstrated. In addition, examples of using the enhanced eQUEST/DOE-2.2 for GSHP related energy analysis will be presented.
At the end, the limitation of current GSHP simulation capability of eQUEST/DOE-2.2 and the plan for future enhancements will be discussed.
Xiaobing is the principle designer and developer of recent enhancements to the DOE-2 simulation source code to more effectively model GSHP systems. He is also a regular responder to BLDG-SIM questions regarding GSHP analysis in DOE-2/eQUEST, providing BLDG-SIMers w/ access to a library of ClimateMaster GSHP components that are directly accessible via the eQUEST wizards.
