Topic: Development and Use of the NBI Core Performance Guide

 Speaker: Kevin J. Madison, P.E., LEED AP, Madison Engineering

Energy simulations and related analysis are a significant cost to achieving LEED EAC1 credits. For small buildings, having to spend thousands of dollars for energy simulations and reporting will lead some designers to forgo LEED certification. USGBC recently approved prescriptive LEED EAC1 credits for buildings that follow the "Core Performance Guide" published by the New Buildings Institute (NBI). Under this approach, small to medium size buildings can achieve up to 6 LEED EAC1 credits by incorporating straightforward prescriptive measures. This presentation will cover the following:
 * the recent USGBC ruling
 * a review of the Core Performance Guide
 * a history of the simulation approach and research used to develop the Core Performance measures

NBI relied on a large pool of existing research to develop the Core Performance Guide including:
 * California's 2005 Database of Energy Efficiency Resources (DEER)
 * California Public Interest Energy Research (PIER)
 * ASHRAE SP102 advanced building guidelines
 * Energy Star buildings as well regional published building level energy use data
 * Input from NBI's technical advisory group

Energy savings analysis for Core Performance utilized a unique batch processing capability of eQUEST that includes the ability to develop "rankings" of individual measures as well as determine the benefits of measure packages.
