Topic: Use of HOMER in Net Zero Projects
Speaker: Eric Youngson, Energy Analyst, Hodaie Engineering
Description:
In the struggle to reach net zero energy use in building design the most efficient design possible must be combined with efficient and cost effective on-site energy sources to offset the remaining demand.
HOMER is a micropower analysis software tool that uses hourly or monthly load profiles and performance information to determine the most cost effective way to meet electric and thermal loads. It is freely available for download from the NREL website https://analysis.nrel.gov/homer/.
HOMER can be used in building design with a load profile to determine net present value of distributed power systems, including renewables. Comparisons can be done between different technologies and different system configurations for a specific technology.
The presentation will include:
· Overview of the program and its original purpose
· Program capabilities
· A net-zero design example with screen shots from the program
· Sources of input information including electric loads, solar and wind resources as well as equipment performance
