Fort Lewis 2017 Real Property Master Plan: Creating a Sustainable Community

TOM TOLMAN, LEED AP, ARCHITECT, MASTER PLANNING | FORT LEWIS PUBLIC WORKS

When talking sustainability at Fort Lewis, it's not just about the buildings - greater sustainability hinges on looking at how we plan our facilities. Our greatest opportunities lie in thinking about how buildings fit into neighborhoods, neighborhoods into the installation, installation into the region, and so on. The idea of a sustainable community was a major consideration of the renewed Fort Lewis master plan.  Fort Lewis is one of the largest Army installations and a major economic engine for the Puget Sound region. More than 600 people from across the installation participated in an intense visioning session to guide the vision and master plan.  Thirteen sustainable neighborhoods were identified in the plan with detailed Area Development Plans (ADPs) targeting goals like walkable neighborhoods and great streets.  This presentation will cover the master planning vision, key projects, and how Fort Lewis is measuring sustainable planning.

7:30am for networking, program at 8:00am
