VAV FAN ENERGY USE - MORE THAN THE SYSTEM CURVE
Speaker: REID HART, PE, PORTLAND ENERGY CONSERVATION, INC.
A VAV system operates using a combination of speed and damper control. The system is common in commercial buildings, and as such, is frequently the object of energy modeling.
The default fan curves in DOE2 based programs (eQuest, PowerDOE, etc.) generally underestimates fan power when used in a VAV system as they do not account for damper effects. This is because the affinity laws assume ALL dampers are wide open for a proper VFD system curve; however, at best only the critical zones are. This may result in significant deviations between estimated and actual energy consumption.
While temperature reset is easily accommodated in DOE2 based programs, static reset requires a new fan curve (FAN-EIR-FPLR) to model fan energy accurately.
The presentation will discuss the application and use of the California Commissioning Collaborative’s FanSysCalc tool which provides a more accurate fan curve using an iterative solution of two variables.
The step-by-step use of the tool will be presented. In addition, real fan energy data taken from a VAV system fan will be compared to modeled data.
All that enrolled members need to do to register for this event is to click on the link (http://www.energytrust.org/bsug), enter their email address, preferences and finally click on register.
Other
interested people should follow the same steps and complete the
enrollment form which will appear at the bottom of the page.
The Building Simulation Users' Group (BSUG) meets on the third Wednesday of every month from 12:00 - 1:30pm and is designed to be an on-going, collegial group whose objectives are: To make participants more effective as building modelers and generally raise the quality of building analysis and design in the PNW. To promote the positive interaction between design and energy modeling. To provide a forum for ideas and questions regarding energy-related design and building simulation.
BSUG is sponsored by the Energy Trust of Oregon, NW Natural and the Oregon Department of Energy. In addition, ASHRAE validates the sessions as professional development hours for registered engineers and Certified Energy Managers.
