The 2009 conference will be a catalytic agent for finding common ground among diverse perspectives and forging consensus on common issues related to land use policy and practice. Together, this diverse group of community leaders can see to it that growth management and real estate development creates a quality built environment which adds long-term economic, environmental and social value to our community that benefits citizens today, and future generations. It is possible in a place like Whatcom County!

8:15     Welcome

8:30     The Other Half of the Challenge, Greg Searle

Green buildings & infrastructure are half The Solution. We must enlist the vast ingenuity of green professionals to solve  the other half; making green lifestyles just as convenient as grey lifestyles.  Learn how residents took responsibility for a significant reduction in their personal carbon footprint at BedZED, an eco-neighborhood that has been called “Perhaps the most influential of all housing projects this century,” and learn how those lessons are being applied in the ambitious attempt to create a “truly sustainable” community in Sonoma, California.

10:00     Break

10:15     True Urbanism, Mark Hinshaw

Learn how demographic and economic changes are creating a desire to live closer in to the center of cities. A rethinking of what this means for neighborhoods, streets, the delivery of goods and services, and parks.

Sightline Scores Smart Growth, Roger Valdez

Think you have mastered all the benefits to density? Join research powerhouse Sightline Institute for new ideas on why density is preferable to sprawl and why the urban-suburban-rural trichotomy might be fading from view.

11:30     Break

11:45     Density Done Right, Don Vehige and Sean Canady

As we work towards a transition of positive growth we also need to consider the importance on design. This session ropes you into a graphical montage of actual mixed use projects demonstrating successful density models.

12:45     UrbanPlan SLAM

Your design team is tasked with one of Bellingham’s most diffi cult planning decisions. Through integrated design, pitch your idea to council and neighborhood activists. Join us for this interactive SLAM, and compete with your peers in this engaging session aimed at smashing barriers.
