The BC Hydro Power Smart New Construction Program and Cascadia Region Green Building Council were pleased to offer this new full-day workshop for owners, developers, architects, engineers, cost consultants, and others involved in new K-12 school facilities.

Mr. Damy has over 12 years experience in process re-engineering, project
management and product development/implementation at IBM and TELUS. He

LIVING BUILDING FINANCIAL STUDY
Ms. Woolliams gave a brief overview of the Living Building Challenge, particularly focusing on the energy petal. She then briefly presented the Schools energy section of Cascadia's Living
Building Financial Study. This study examines the difference in first hard costs between LEED Gold buildings and Living Buildings.
9:30 Anne Schopf, FAIA, Partner, Director of Design, Mahlum Architects, Seattle, Wash.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM BEN FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY
Ms. Schopf is trained as both an architect and engineer. Her work with educational environments has been recognized with two Top 10 Green Project Awards from the AIA Committee on the Environment; three of her projects have been finalists for the CEFPI James D. McConnell Award of Excellence. She will present case studies of the following schools: Ben Franklin Elementary School, Bainbridge Island High School, Rosa Parks Elementary School, and Rosedale Elementary School, among others. MAKING THE FINANCIAL CASE FOR LIVING BUILDINGS IN SNOHOMISH COUNTY
Valley View Middle School in Snohomish, Wash., is one of the first public schools in North America to look seriously at meeting the Living Building Challenge. Ralph Rohwer, project director and spokesman for the school district will discuss the financial utility analysis which he went through with the school board to enable them to decide which decisions to make based on whether there was a return on investment. Tim Jewett, lead architect for the project, was present to discuss the project from an architectural design standpoint. Please view their presentation here and hear the presentation here.
11:15: Nygil Goggins, Senior Economic Advisor, BC Climate Action Secretariat, Ministry of Environment
MAKING THE FINANCIAL CASE IN BC
Nygil will speak about the BC Government’s current carbon goals, how schools fit in, and how owners can effectively work within BC’s capital planning process to make the case for energy efficiency and low energy design. He is currently responsible for managing and coordinating climate policy development across government and providing strategic policy advice to the Cabinet Committee on Climate Action. Nygil holds a masters degree in resource management from Simon Fraser University with a focus in economic modeling. Additional experience includes climate policy consulting with MK Jaccard and Associates and independent consulting for the design of renewable energy projects. Mr. Rudolf will speak about overall design strategies for high
performance schools, including daylighting, massing, and orientation.

NEW MECHANICAL SYSTEMS DESIGNS FOR SCHOOLS
Mr. Mikler will speak about overall mechanical systems design, and why it is critical to making the case for low energy schools. He will give examples of low energy schools design including at Glen

ENERGY MODELING AND LIGHTING ENGINEERING
Mr. Love will speak about lighting engineering and design, controls, commissioning and the importance of including lighting into the integrated design process.
