The Nines luxury
hotel occupies the upper nine floors of the historic Meier & Frank
department store. Reuse as a hotel was made possible through
interventions such as the cutting of a seven-story daylight atrium and
an innovative viscous-damper seismic upgrade. Significant
sustainability efforts include low-emitting finishes, water and energy
reduction, and green housekeeping, all of which were still rare in
luxury hotel properties when this LEED Silver project began.
A
brief presentation will be followed by a walking tour of the project.
In addition to specific sustainable design elements, presenters will
discuss the development process, complexities of project design and
construction, unique aspects of the mechanical systems, and the impacts
of sustainable design both on hotel development and operation.
