In the words of the Living Building Institute, the Living Building Challenge “defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today and acts to diminish the gap between current limits and ideal solutions”. Towards the end of 2009, Version 2.0 of the Living Building Challenge was officially unveiled. This new version is a true evolution of the original including the addition of social equity, no more “prerequisites” (we call them “imperatives” now), and formal acknowledgement of the entire built environment (parks, neighborhoods and renovations, not just buildings). Join us for this presentation which will introduce each of the imperatives, highlight what has changed and encourage discussion of real-life examples and hurdles of the Living Building Challenge.

Alexandra Ramsden is a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED® AP), Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA), and Sustainable Design Consultant at Rushing|Blackbird. She is the Studio Lead for the Blackbird Studio, which provides sophisticated, holistic, full-service sustainability consulting, including technical systems expertise, LEED facilitation, strategy development, alternative funding services, innovative cost-benefit feedback, and out-of-the-box thinking. Alexandra has conducted classes on the process of integrated sustainable design, Zero-Impact Design, and LEED implementation. With more than 10 years experience in the interior architecture and sustainable design industry, Alexandra brings a wealth of environmental expertise to the table.
