Title: Sustainable Stewardship: Greening Historic Buildings
Description: The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Sustainability Program is demonstrating that conservation and improvement of our existing built resources, including re-use of historic and older buildings, greening the existing building stock, and reinvestment in older and historic communities, is crucial to combating climate change. The construction and operation of buildings accounts for more than 40% of the United State’s carbon dioxide emissions. But reusing and retrofitting our existing buildings can reduce these emissions dramatically. In fact, our existing buildings are one of our greatest renewable resources.
Barbara Campagna, the Chief Architect of the National Trust, will discuss the National Trust’s Sustainability Program and how the 29 historic sites of the National Trust are integrating historic preservation values with green building practices – from green housekeeping techniques to sustainability master plans to LEED certification for historic rehabilitations.
The lecture will be followed with a panel of the following people:
- Larry Foster, President Heritage BC
- Randy Cleveland, Director, Infrastructure Planning, City of Kelowna
- Randy's presentation was primarily a summary of the Council Report and Presentation made to Council on December 14, 2009. It outlined a criteria developed in collaboration with the Community Heritage Commission to evaluate priorities for public expenditure in the 19 City-owned heritage assets. Council approved all recommendations. Following that presentation, Council approved a 2010 budget to complete conservation plans and develop partnerships for the restoration and operation of 6 heritage facilities (Brent Grist Mill, Brent’s Dairy Barn, Fleming House, Ritz Café, Surtees Barn, St. Aidan’s Church). The full report including the various addenda and the power point presentation are available here.
- Peter Chataway, Consultant
- Maria Stanborough, Municipal Planner, City of Kelowna
- Barbara Campagna, Chief Architect, National Trust
Panelists will have 2 - 3 minutes each to discuss one of the following questions:
- “What do developers, builders and architects need (from Government, from Cascadia, from others) to start greening heritage as a regular practice and start being sensitive to heritage in all green projects?”
- “Can you share examples of opportunities you have been part of that make for a successful ‘green rehabilitation’ project?”
