The Tacoma/Olympia Branch of the Cascadia Green Building Council presents a hands-in workshop to provide architects, designers, engineers and students an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of design for net-zero energy buildings.  With the adoption of net-zero building energy use goals and policies, there is a great deal of attention on aggressive building performance strategies.  Dozens of net-zero energy buildings have been completed, and hundreds more are in development, including several in our region.  Increasingly, designers will be expected to plan and deliver buildings which use substantially less energy than those we occupy today.  What does it take to really deliver this level of building performance?

This session will focus on strategies for the design and operation of high performance buildings, and the approaches needed to take the final step into net-zero energy use.  Working together we will discuss the technical limits of current design strategies, and explore the kinds of new design and operation strategies that will be necessary to successfully achieve net-zero energy use goals.  Attendees will also learn about benchmarking and performance tracking, performance tracking tools, and current national policy and program goals for net-zero energy use in buildings.

Presenters include national and regional experts, including Mark Frankel of the New Building Institute, Tom Marseille of WSP-Flack & Kurtz and Robert Bombino from RDH Building Sciences.
