We
will be meeting in Kelowna, British Columbia, this year. Located in the
interior of British Columbia, Kelowna (pop. 106,000) and the
surrounding region is known for its lakes, mountains, orchards, and more
recently, wineries.
This
year’s conference will address the unique planning and architectural
challenges that small cities (pops. 50,000 to 300,000) face when trying
to balance their heritage with their future aspirations. Events will
commence in downtown Kelowna with a reception and keynote address on
Friday afternoon in Kelowna’s striking Rotary Centre for the Arts.
Afterwards, there will be a walking tour of downtown Kelowna’s Cultural
District, the hub of Kelowna’s efforts to revitalize its downtown core.
On Saturday morning, proceedings will move to the UBC Okanagan campus
located 20 minutes north of downtown, where conference papers discussing
various small cities in the US and Canada will be given. After lunch
and a tour of the sustainable building initiatives on campus, a panel
discussion that will be open to the public will take place on the
challenges particular to Kelowna, followed by dinner for conference
participants in downtown Kelowna. On Sunday, the final day of the
conference, participants will tour by coach important heritage sites and
beautiful wineries, stopping to enjoy a gourmet lunch and sample local
wines.
