Transparent and Socially Equitable Materials Economy WORKSHOP
Join us for a panel discussion on persistent toxic chemicals. The discussion will revolve around the Living Building Challenge Red List, Vinyl and FSC vs SFI. The panel discussion will be followed by breakout groups; refreshments and networking before and after.
Moderator:
Patti Southard, King County Program Manager
Patti Southard is a Program Manager for King County Green Tools where she provides technical
assistance for the County’s LEED and Built Green initiatives. Patti also works with the Suburban Cities of
King County to assist in implementation of green building programs. Patti is also project manager for the
Cocoon Remodel Tool; 2009 winner of five awards.
Panelists:
Ian Hana, FSC National Director of Development
As an FSC Director Ian has broad expertise within the FSC system. He is based in Port Townsend. Before joining FSC-US staff, Ian served as Director of Northwest Certified Forestry at Northwest Natural Resource Group. Prior to NNRG, Ian founded Windfall Lumber in Olympia, and developed FSC markets nationally at Certified Forest Products Council and Certified Wood & Paper Association.
Ben Cook, President, Quantum Bio
Benjamin Cook has 20 years experience in the environmental industry as an environmental consultant,
green business consultant and expert in green building chemistry. Since 2006 Mr. Cook has been
President of Green Building Systems, which consults on green chemistry and engineers sustainable
alternatives to toxic building products. Mr. Cook serves on the Board of the NW Eco Builders Guild.
Amanda Sturgeon, International Living Building Institute Certification Director
Amanda is the Certification Director at the International Living Building Institute (ILBI), she is
a licensed architect with fifteen years experience designing and managing some of the most
sustainable buildings in the Pacific Northwest. Prior to joining ILBI she was a Senior
Associate at Perkins Will where she co-directed the Sustainable Design Initiative.
Shirli Axelrod, City of Seattle
Shirli drafted the City of Seattle’s Environmentally Responsible Purchasing Policy, and assists staff to
incorporate environmental factors in purchasing goods and services. A Senior Environmental Analyst for
SPU, Shirli also focuses on moving materials away from waste disposal into productive re-use and reprocessing.
She currently leads a regional carpet recovery project in the northwest, and handles various
“problem waste” and regulatory projects.
Jessica Green, Brightworks
Jessica is previously a LEED project manager and LEED-NC reviewer for the USGBC, and has managed
over 30 LEED NC, CI and EB projects. In addition to LEED project management, Jessica advises teams
on how to strive for true sustainability on master plan scale projects as well as individual buildings
seeking to go beyond LEED.
