Design & Build New Energy-Efficient Multi Unit Residential Buildings (MURBs) in BC
Morning Session:
8:30 REGISTRATION
9:00 Luis Damy, P.Eng., Manager, High Performance Building Program, BC Hydro
HOW BC HYDRO
CAN HELP YOUR HIGH EFFICIENCY MURB PROJECT
Mr. Damy has over 12 years
experience in process re-engineering, project
management and product development and implementation at IBM and TELUS. He
will briefly discuss how BC Hydro can help your high efficiency MURB project. Please view his presentation here and hear his presentation here.
9:15 Mona Lemoine, Education and Training Director, Cascadia Green Building Council
CASCADIA RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY ON HIGH EFFICIENCY MURBS
Mona has over ten years of experience working in the building industry. She first joined Cascadia in 2007 as British Columbia Director and is now Education and Training Director responsible for all aspects of the organization's education and training across Cascadia and beyond. Mona holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design and Master of Architecture from the University of Manitoba. She will discuss current research and advocacy projects at Cascadia and how they impact the multi-unit residential market. Please view her presentation here and hear her presentation here.
9:30 Q&A
9:45 Dr. Guido Wimmers, Principal, Building Evolution Sustainable Design
CASE STUDIES AND LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE LARGEST PASSIVE HOUSES BUILT TO DATE
Dr. Guido Wimmers is founding director of the Canadian Passive
House Institute (CanPHI), an author of the Passive Design Tool Kit of
the City of Vancouver, and one of the initiators of the
Canadian passive house, the Austria House for the Olympics in Whistler. He holds a master degree in architecture and did his
PhD in engineering science in the field of energy efficient building
technology at the institute of building physics. Before moving to Canada in 2007, he has worked as
an architect, independent consultant and project manager for Energy
Tirol, designed and executed or supervised the design of numerous
residential, commercial and institutional “Passivhaus” buildings in
Austria and Italy. In this presentation he will give a detailed case study of two larger residential buildings, both built by a
social housing company in Innsbruck/Austria. The Passive House
"Mitterweg" (60 units, gross-floor-area 5140m2) was build in 1997 and
was one of the very first larger Passive House projects and the Passive
House "Lodenareal" (354 units, gross-floor-area 35000m2) is the largest
Passive House so far, built in 2007-2009. The presentation will give
detailed information about the performance of the buildings, the energy
demand, heating load and energy consumption, the components and systems
which were used and the lessons learned from these projects. Please view his presentation here and hear his presentation here.
10:30 Q&A
10:45 BREAK
11:00 Michael Knight, General Manager, Streamline Group; and Paul Warwick,
Construction Manager, The Brook
LESSONS
LEARNED FROM NORTH VANCOUVER'S BROOK
Streamline Properties is putting their North Vancouver condo - the Brook - forward as the greenest standalone condo development in Canada. An Evolution Fund project, it is aiming for LEED Platinum, the project includes a ground source heat pump to heat and cool the building, solar thermal to preheat domestic hot water, and heat recovery ventilation units that
in each unit. It is anticipated that these and other low energy design elements will reduce building energy use from a standard building by over 65%. This presentation will give an overview of the systems, as well as some examination of how those systems are working together in the first year of operation. Please view their presentation here and hear their presentation here.
12:00 LUNCH
Afternoon Session
12:30 Warren Knowles, P.Eng., RDH Building Science and Technology
BUILDING ENVELOPES: SCIENCE AND PERFORMANCE
Warren
Knowles is a Principal and Senior Building Science Specialist with the
RDH Group. Mr. Knowles focuses his expertise on building science aspects
of new construction and existing buildings in both Canada and the US.
His experience includes commercial, institutional and residential
building projects. Warren has practical experience with most enclosure
systems including glazing, metal panel, stucco, EIFS, masonry, concrete,
and membrane systems. In addition to new and existing building
projects, Warren has been involved in several policy, guideline and
research initiatives including the development of a study to assess the
performance of building enclosure assemblies and details in high rise
buildings in the BC Lower Mainland, which he will present here. Please hear his presentation here.
1:15 Q&A
1:30 Vladamir Mikler, P.Eng, Cobalt Engineering LLP
NEW MECHANICAL SYSTEMS DESIGNS FOR MURBS
Vladimir Mikler brings over 20 years of experience in all aspects of sustainable building design.
As a recognized industry leader, he has completed numerous successful
MURB projects. His broad experience extends from fundamental and applied
university research, through practical design and project management in
both consulting engineering and design-build environments, to “hands-on”
construction management and field system installations. His presentation here will give an overview of the energy systems used throughout the Olympic Village, including the net zero project, and he will look at how the expected energy use compares to actual energy use that he sees in Cobalt's other MURB projects, such as the Flatiron Building. Please hear his presentation here.
2:15 Q&A
2:30 Colin Genge, President, Retrotec Energy Innovations Ltd.
AIR LEAKAGE: BEST PRACTICE IN RESEARCH AND POLICY
Mr. Genge has played a major role in the development of door-fan energy standards, including Canada’s CGSB 149 and ASTM E-779. He developed the NFPA12A and 2001 Enclosure Integrity Procedure in 1988 to set standards for clean agent fire suppressants in high value enclosures. Mr. Genge has conducted extensive research on testing methods for high rise buildings, and written and presented internationally on his findings. See his ASHRAE article about controlling air leakage in tall buildings here. His presentation here will review research of air leakage in Vancouver multi-unit residential buildings (including this study with Graham Finch) as well as present policy recommendations for the industry. Please view his presentation here and hear his presentation here.
3:00 Q&A
3:15 Stuart Lyon, Principal, GBL Architects
LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE VANCOUVER OLYMPIC ATHLETES VILLAGE
Stuart
Lyon, MAIBC, is a principal in GBL Architects Inc. and has practiced
architecture in B.C. for 30 years. His firm worked on the Vancouver
Olympic Athletes Village and is engaged in numerous other sustainable
projects around the province. His presentation here will focus on the
architectural aspects - massing, daylighting, orientation, interior and
exterior design issues as well as other design strategies used in a
variety of Southeast False Creek Olympic Village multi unit residential buildings as well as specifically in the Net Zero Building. He will also briefly discuss the energy systems and expected performance at SFU's Verdant, as well as an innovative financial model that was used there. Please view his presentation here and hear his presentation here.
