Topic: The Business Case for Green

 ralph dinola :

Topic: "Future Ready Buildings: learning from the past, while preparing for the future"

In recent years, environmental urgency has been overshadowed by economic slowdown, a focus on job creation and reviving the building industry.  How can we build strength and momentum in the building industry and transform our building stock at the same time?  What can we learn from model buildings that stand in our communities today?  The examination of long-forgotten examples of sustainable design and a fresh approach to building evaluation and deep retrofit hold the key to address environmental concerns and bring about significant change in our buildings, neighborhoods and cities.  Please join Ralph DiNola as he explores our legacy of green building and outlines an approach to transforming our buildings and our building practice.

Ralph DiNola, LEED AP BD+C, O+M; LEED Faculty™

Principal, Green Building Services, Inc.

Chair, International Living Future Institute Board of Directors

Ralph is a Principal at Green Building Services, Inc. (GBS) - a full service sustainability consulting firm. With passion and vision, he guides project teams through an integrated development process which includes eco-charrettes, training, team coordination and technical analysis for decision makers. With more than 20 years of experience in green building consulting and historic preservation, Ralph brings a broad range of expertise and hands-on experience to every project engagement.  Ralph has consulted on over 100 LEED projects, including recently certified Mercy Corps World Headquarters (LEED Platinum), Mirabella South Waterfront (LEED Platinum) and White Stag Block historic rehabilitation (LEED Gold). Ralph helped the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center become the first LEED Gold historic project in the U.S. and his firm helped transform the Portland Armory into the first LEED Platinum project on the National Register.  Ralph’s philosophy is that the adaptive reuse makes environmental sense, business sense, and cultural sense by maintaining tangible connections to our past while enhancing our communities for the future. He is actively involved in the ongoing evolution of the historic preservation and green building movements.
