I05: Human Factors
Presented by: Jim Wise
Human Factors has infused design for as long as humans have been designing. In construction of our dwellings, gathering, work places and artifacts, we find persistent demonstrable evidence of our attempts to make these better engage and extend our abilities and experiences.
Human Factors informs design from considerations of basic health and safety through concerns for functionality, comfort and security to aspirations of aesthetic enjoyment and enabling of the human spirit. All of these have been and are being addressed through the applied science of Human Factors, with both unexpected and reassuring, results. This session will provide every participant with a broad yet critical knowledge of the Human Factors of Buildings, as well as leaving them with conceptual tools, principles and resources they can immediately put to work in their own professional fields.
Learning Objectives
A major argument and allure of green buildings is that they are as good for people as for the planet. Generally, they have been and they can be, because the strategies of green design and good Human Factors design, grounded in ecology and biology, significantly interleave. But knowing explicitly how Human Factors enters design allows the professional to selectively address competing or conflicting design goals so as to meet more of them through creatively efficient solutions, without compromise. This session will identify the connections between green building strategies and occupant usability, comfort, and satisfaction, and show how to address building design and engineering from an integrated human-environment perspective.
