Presenters

Reflecting the deep and broad skill set required to design and construct a Living Building, Cascadia is working hard to assemble an international cast of experts from a broad swath of disciplines to create and present the Living Building Leader sessions. Drawing from long-term green building practitioners, researchers, and faculty, the sessions are intended to provide participants with instant access to leaders in the field.

 

Mark Frankel

Mark is technical director of the New Buildings Institute, a 501(c)3 organization in Washington State that works with local, regional, national and utility groups to promote improved energy performance in commercial new buildings. Mark oversees the Advanced Buildings work of NBI, including the production of the Core Performance Guide, a practical guide to advanced energy savings in commercial buildings. Mark is a licensed architect and has been consulting on sustainable design and energy efficiency for over 15 years. His career has focused on a variety of technical topics, including building and site design, occupant health, energy use, and high performance mechanical systems. He has also consulted on hundreds of building projects from single family to large commercial buildings. He has also developed curriculum and conducted numerous educational sessions on energy efficiency and green building. Prior to joining NBI, Mark worked as a senior consultant on sustainable design at Paladino and Company, and as an Energy Consultant at Ecotope Inc. For more information: www.newbuildings.org

Jack Geibig

Jack is a professor at the University of Tennessee and director of UT's Center for Clean Products and Clean Technologies. He is interested in conducting research on the development of environmental tools, techniques and strategies that improve the efficiency of products or processes while reducing risks to human health and the environment. His research includes the use and further development of the Cleaner Technology Substitute Assessment (CTSA). The CTSA uses a life-cycle approach to evaluate and compare a product or process, along with any potential alternatives, in the areas of performance, cost, and environmental and human health.

His interests include the development of life cycle tools for the industrial manufacturing sector, the application of activity-based costing principles to environmental process improvements, and the integration of cost and environmental performance to process-simulation modeling.

Kevin Madison

Kevin is President of Madison Engineering PS. He is a registered Mechanical Engineer in the State of Washington and has been an independent consultant in Seattle since 1997. Mr. Madison is one of the authors of eQuest Title 24 and Savings By Design compliance analysis ruleset and the ruleset for the COMcheck-Plus compliance tool developed for the U.S. Department of Energy. Mr. Madison provides simulation and other energy consulting services on major commercial and industrial projects throughout the country. Prior to 1997, Mr. Madison managed a comprehensive training and education program for the Washington State Energy Code and worked for the California Energy Commission developing and supporting Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards. Most recently, Mr. Madison has performed extensive batch analysis using eQUEST to support the development of the ABCore advanced building guideline and the California Database of Energy Efficiency Resources.

Jason McLennan

Jason is CEO of the Cascadia Region Green Building Council, the Pacific Northwest's chapter of the USGBC and Canada Green Building Councils. Jason is the original author of the Living Building Challenge. Jason is a nationally recognized leader in the sustainable building industry. He is trained as an architect and has been a principal at BNIM, an architecture firm in Kansas City and an innovative force in green building for the last decade. As a thought leader on sustainable issues, Jason is highly attuned to the challenges and opportunities that exist in this period of rapid transformation in the building and development industry. He brings a desire to create change and recognizes that the Cascadia chapter is in a unique leadership position nationally as USGBC and Canada Green Building Council's most mature chapter.  He is personally connected to the Northwest and Lower Mainland as someone born and raised in Canada and who received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon. Lisa Petterson

Lisa is a project designer / project architect with SERA Architects, based in Portland, OR. At SERA, Lisa's work is focused on the development of projects with green building goals.  Currently, she is working on the Kenton Living Building, a four unit housing development designed to meet Cascadia’s Living Building Challenge.  She also is currently managing an aquatics addition to the East Portland Community Center which is targeting a LEED Platinum rating, and is working with Cascadia on the Living Building Financial Study and Code Barriers study.  In addition, Lisa coordinated the Bullitt grant effort which identified code barriers to "Achieving Water Independence in Oregon's Mixed-use buildings. 

Lisa is also a certified lighting designer and does lighting design for many of SERA's projects. She designed the lighting for SERA's office TI, which was awarded a LEED goal certification and served as the Project Architect / lighting designer for the recently completed upstairs expansion, which will be submitted as LEED platinum.  She's participated in several of the firm’s design competitions, including two recent winning entries for the City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development’s GIF grant.  As part of her position at SERA, Lisa coordinates the office’s work with the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory, acts as the office’s daylighting advocate, organizes the in-office learning series “SERA thinks Green” and chairs the Sustainable Action Committee.
