15 Minutes of Brilliance
Thank you to Living Future 09 sponsor: Energy Trust of Oregon
Each year, Cascadia invites individuals with transformative and distinctive ideas to the stage at Living Future to share their solutions to the built environment’s most urgent issues. These ideas step outside the box and inspire, engage and empower others to follow suit.
The following individuals were selected for 2009 to present their brilliant ideas, which certainly energized the Unconference audience.
Greg Searle, Executive Director, Bioregional North America, and Geof Syphers, Chief Sustainability Officer, Codding Enterprises
Brilliant Idea: The Gap Between Platinum and True Sustainability

Launched at Living Future 09, this study by green developer Codding Enterprises and Bioregional North America sets out to assess the projected total carbon footprint of building occupants in a sample green neighborhood that is being planned with both LEED-ND and the One Planet frameworks. While LEED-ND goes further than a pure building efficiency approach by reducing car dependence, it delivers a projected overall 18% reduction in emissions. By encouraging sustainable lifestyles through physical measures (e.g. little or no car parking space), sustainable lifestyle service provision and strong incentives, the savings for an average resident could be increased to 40-55% and for a keenly eco-conscious resident to nearly 60%.
Aurora Mahassine, Founder, Tesselation
Brilliant Idea: Habitile - The Hanging Gardens Project
Aurora has been working for 10 years, establishing the domain of Receptive Architecture. She is focused on reconnecting ecological systems integrity through the use of Surface Area Vegetation. Living Architectural Systems, like her Habitile™, turn building envelopes into metabolic cladding, processing air and water for the building and the inhabitants.
Sara Garrett, Director, motiveSpace Coalition
Brillliant Idea: MotiveSpace
Jim Estes
Brilliant Idea: The Greensburg-Living Building Challenge Competition: Building homes that are affordable and exceedingly sustainable
Bryony Schwan, Biomimicry Guild
Brilliant Idea: Outcomes of a biomimicry charrette, identifying prime opportunities for biomimetic research and discovery to solve building industry problems
