Getting to True Sustainability - A Hands-on Workshop Presenting a Practical Systems Approach to Planning and Designing for Full Sustainability

Presenters:

Scott Lewis, CEO Brightworks Sustainability Advisors, Portland, OR

Duke Castle, Principal, The Castle Group, Lake Oswego, OR

Paul Horton, Director of Sustainability, David Evans and Associates, Inc., Portland, OR

The True Sustainability workshop is a hands-on, interactive working session for practitioners to develop and enhance their ability to integrate a more meaningful vision of Full Sustainability into their design efforts. The workshop is structured around a new conceptual framework for sustainability called the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD), which was developed at the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden and released in its current form in May 2008. It is an expansion on the concepts first elaborated in The Natural Step (TNS) framework, but extended to put the TNS framework into a context that ranges from the systems level to the tools level, as follows:

  • Systems Level - Nature’s laws & science; Social and economic principles
  • Success Level - Natural Step “system conditions,” ”Triple Bottom Line,” etc.
  • Strategy Level - “Backcasting”, ABCD Planning Process
  • Action Level - Recycling, green building, renewable energy, water conservation, etc.
  • Tools Level - Natural Capitalism, Cradle-to-Cradle, EMS, Life Cycle Analysis, LEED, Living Building Challenge

The FSSD, in short, describes the relationship between scientific principles, sustainability frameworks such as The Natural Step, implementation models and tools, and tactical strategies, and offers an essential perspective for the effective execution of LEED and Living Building projects. This workshop will provide practical instruction on how to use the model to meaningfully improve the performance of any type of project.
