Living Building Challenge Tools: Mindmapping and Integrative Design Process

Presenters:

Carrie Meinberg Burke, AIA, VA

W. David Winitzky, AIA

George Salah

Mary Davidge, IIDA, LEED AP

It is important to design new tools that are up to the Living Building Challenge. Our team is designing an LBC registered residence in Northern California and has developed an interactive and generative set of mindmapping tools for researching, tracking, documenting, and implementing the LBC prerequisites. The objectives of our presentation are to demonstrate how mindmapping can streamline and simplify a design & delivery process based on Living Building principles, to share actual examples of LBC mindmaps developed for a specific site and client, and to engage participants in hands-on learning of mindmapping. Our proposal is to present the LBC mindmap templates that we have developed and demonstrate the interactive and generative process we are using.

This session will demonstrate how the LBC mindmaps achieve a multiplicity of functions which include: documenting the client’s requirements and design principles; graphically charting the relationship between the 16 LBC prerequisites and the project-specific design principles; establishing a CSI MasterSpec format repository for researching and vetting materials and systems; tracking the process of obtaining LBC Questionnaires from manufacturers; and utilizing research as the basis for specifications, construction documents and practices. The LBC mindmaps document building components and performance toward successful LBC certification.

This session intends to share our learning experiences and the inspiration of working with Living Tools to make Living Buildings.
