The Role of the Green Building Movement in Ending Homelessness

Presenters:

Julie Livingston, Project Manager, Housing Authority of Portland

Dave Otte, Project Architect, Holst Architecture

Paul Schwer, President, PAE Consulting Engineers

Ralph DiNola, Principal, Green Building Services

This session will share Portland’s progress on its plan to end homelessness and the building and social service programs that are being developed to help meet that goal. The plan’s cornerstone project is a new $30,000,000 building that provides 130 units of permanent supportive housing, a 90 bed shelter, access to employment and treatment counseling, and space for services to meet basic human needs - from a shower to a change of clothes to a cup of coffee.  Social equity is one of the least talked about goals of sustainability and this session will tackle the interaction of social equity and the built environment head on. It will discuss the impact of homelessness on both the individual and the community, as well as how one particularly innovative building will address many of the needs of Portland’s homeless population and the surrounding neighborhood. Participants will hear why Design (with a capital “D”) is important in this community and other lessons learned, along with ideas for “tunneling through the cost barrier” on affordable housing projects.
