The Living Building Challenge - From Aspiration to Reality

Presenters:

Carrie Meinberg Burke, Architect, CMB Architecture + Industrial Design

Phillip Murray, General Contractor, Phillip A. Murray Construction

This session will feature a residence that is registered with the Living Building Challenge (LBC) and is currently under construction. Growing out of direct experiences, the session’s objective is to share the tools and understanding developed from a collaborative cross-disciplinary process and analytical methods toward the goal of achieving design solutions for each petal of the LBC. This session will engage the audience in an interactive discussion on the successes and challenges involved in designing to the LBC. From the architectural team, participants will explore design intent and performance criteria. The general contractor will draw the audience into the process of transforming conventional construction practices into Living Building practices.  And the owner will discuss the evolution of the project relative to his early vision.  All students of energy modeling, night sky cooling, passive trickle ventilation, Bernoulli effect ventilation, calibrated shading & regional mapping, geothermal energy piers , water balance analysis, rainwater / graywater integration, materials research, vetting, procurement, enforcement, field mockups, and integrating local materials will find something of interest in this landmark project.

A panel presentation will be followed by discussion of how to use mindmapping as a CSI Specification format and collaborative tool, how to mine the data for design inspiration, and more broadly, how to build and live the Living Building Challenge.
