The Living Learning Center: One Year Later and Beyond

Presenters:

Daniel F. Hellmuth, Principal, Hellmuth + Bicknese Architects

Neil Myers, Principal, Williams Creek Consulting

The Living Learning Center in St. Louis, Missouri opened in May 2009 and is pending certification as a Living Building.  The past year has included monitoring and adjusting energy consumption and occupant behavior, reviewing what the greater design, owner and contractor team would do differently in future Living Building Challenge projects, and examining how the whole experience has challenged Washington University to broaden its Sustainability Initiatives.

This session will build on learning from the project and explore the extent to which a Living Building eliminates the concept of waste, how this aspect could be strengthened in the Living Building Challenge structure, and ways in which site and building can be improved and added to over time. Using the Living Learning Center as a catalyst, the participants will engage in examination of the site and building as a biological system, and how these concepts feed back into future evolution of the Living Building Challenge. Participants also will explore ways in which the site, building, and future additions can be used as part of the Living Learning Center curriculum.

Session Format: PRACTICUM.
