Post Occupancy Building Performance Evaluation: Understanding How Best to Use Feedback to Improve Outcome

Presenters:

Mark Frankel, Technical Director, New Buildings Institute

Jonathan Heller, Principal Mechanical Engineer, Ecotope, Inc.

Feedback on actual building performance is critical for the industry as we try to move toward net-zero energy and water use in buildings. These issues are being approached from many directions, yet there is no consensus on the best tools and methods for collecting and comparing this information. Performance modeling has been relied upon as a method for predicting the energy use of various end uses, but recent Measurement and Verification studies show that without calibration to actual utility bills, modeled results can easily be off by a factor of two or more. This session will focus on the key issues that designers and building portfolio managers need to consider when evaluating actual building performance. Facilitators will provide examples of tools and processes that have been used successfully to generate meaningful building performance feedback, addressing the following questions: WHAT needs to be measured and what can we learn from this? HOW best to measure it? WHO collects and analyzes the data? WHEN does the feedback plan, metering, and analysis need to take place?
