The University of British Columbia in Vancouver and the Okanagan College are accelerating sustainability by striving to attain Living Building standards for large scale educational buildings. UBC’s first regenerative building, designed by Busby, Perkins and Will, will be the Centre for Interactive Research in Sustainability (CIRS). CIRS will be the first net energy positive and carbon positive building in the Pacific NorthWest. Okanagan College's first Living Building, designed by CEI, will be The Centre of Excellence. This building will be at the forefront of sustainable design in Western Canada. We discuss the challenges and successes, and the critical need for teamwork and holistic design.
