EcoDistricts are a way of looking at neighborhood development in a holistic way that balances social, environmental and economic priorities. City zoning or property ownership may initially define the initial physical boundaries of an EcoDistrict; in practice the systems that impact the district have different boundaries. Different systems optimize at different scales and an understanding of these scale factors is essential for developing effective EcoDistricts. This presentation will review how the different scales of systems such as transportation, energy, food, etc. are optimized. The optimization process maps the existing system flows and assesses the costs and benefits of different options.
