Interactive COMFEN Training : a free, intuitive, comparative, early design tool for windows and façades
Steve Selkowitz, Department Head, Building Technologies Department, Lawrence Berkeley
National LaboratoryMark Perepelitza, Associate Partner at ZGF Architects
Robin Mitchell, software developer, Windows & Daylighting Group, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Moderator:
Maurya McClintock
This interactive training session will teach participants how to use the new COMFEN freeware simulation software to compare façade systems and other components with respect to their ability to control solar gain, internal heating/cooling energy, lighting energy, thermal comfort, daylight harvesting and visual comfort. This session and COMFEN have been developed for the novice and experienced software user. The software has been proven to be highly effective for architects, engineers, contractors, consultants and façade system manufacturers assessing the energy and comfort implications of façade alternatives particularly at early concept/schematic design and/or value-engineering phases of projects.
If attendees would like to ‘follow along’ with the COMFEN live-demo, please come with COMFEN loaded onto your laptop. You can download the required software

Robin Mitchell
Robin Mitchell, a software developer in the Windows & Daylighting Group at Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory, manages the development of the suite of programs for thermal and optical
analysis of fenestration products. With over 20 years of experience in energy simulation software
development, one of her primary responsibilities as a liaison between program users and software
programmers, is to ensure programs are continually developed to meet the user’s needs. In this
capacity, Robin has given countless software training sessions and presentations over the years,
showing users how to operate the programs, while also getting feedback about useful further
development.
