Net Zero Energy is Not Enough! When It Comes to Climate Change Embodied Carbon is the Next Frontier

Presenters:

James Jenkins, Senior Project Associate, O’Brien & Company

As we move towards net zero energy buildings, the embodied energy becomes a larger and larger percentage of its overall impact on climate change. We know how to achieve net zero energy and have several strategies to achieve it but we don’t always understand the ramifications of our choices from a larger carbon perspective. In this session we’ll look at various types of insulation and solar pv system and explore the interrelationship of these two strategies on the overall embodied carbon emissions of net zero energy single family residence design.

We’ll also take a look at the implications of insulation choices on various LBC Imperatives related to insulations and solar pv choices: Red List, Appropriate Sourcing, Embodied Carbon and Conservation and Reuse.

Session Format:  Session will be a mixture of presentation, discussion and exercises.
