Schools as centers of learning in our communities play a critical role in the development of a restorative civilization. In many schools today, students have already become eager adopters of sustainable practices, and have developed a clear understanding of their role in defining their future and tose of other generations to come. Using various communication methods, hear from students and school representatives about behavioral changes and practices adopted. Come prepared to be challenged to rething the way we still do things, and leave inspired by our willing partners in shaping a sustainable future.
Presenter Bios
Nancy Bond
Nancy has spend the past 10 years focusing on educating students and staff on howt o change behavior to save resources. She manages programs promoting waste reduction and recycling, energy conservation, alternative energy, green building education, stormwater management and transportation alternatives. Her work has saved teh district more than $7 million. Bond's work as resource conservation specialist was recently recognized by the Oregon Associateion of Professional Engineers' Energy Manager of the Year Award, in addition to being nominated by National Geographic Society Foundation for National Education Association's inaugural Green Prize in Public Education. Nancy is a Board member of Oregon's Center for Innovative School Facilities, and has presented her work at regional and national school conferences.z
Dr. Bill Wiecking
Dr. Wiecking is the Director of the new Hawaii Preparatory Academy Energy Lab, a 6000 sq ft. renewable energy facility located in Kamuela, Hawaii. Bill has been an educational instructor in Hawaii since 1980, enabligh students with hands-on learning projects in the sciences. His vision is to demonstrate sustainable practices in Hawaii as a moedl for a global cuuriculum on sustainability. Bill was actively involved in the development of the Energy Lab project, and the integration of lerning opportunities in the project, which is pursuing certification under both LEED certification and the Living Building Challenge. Bill is an active participant and presenter at various school and technology related organizations and conferences.
As a practicing professional for 7 years, and previous 6 years work-study in the field of Sustainable Design, he has committed his work to the implementation of sustainable building practices in Alaska, reconnecting native innovations with modern technologies. McCool Carlson Green is leading a sustainable transformation of the built environment in Alaska with the state’s first (3) and only LEED Certified Green Schools. The firm focuses on providing solutions that are cost-effective; foster long term benefits in energy conservation, ecological stewardship and indoor environmental quality; creating a more sustainable future for our communities. Serving the community in Alaska for several years as a volunteer through various professional and nonprofit affiliations Mr. Gamache is dedicated to helping educate the community on the implementation of practical sustainable building solutions. Mr. Gamache is the Founding Chair for the Alaska Green Schools Committee, represents Alaska in Washington DC as a Congressional Advocate lobbying to support rural Schools in Alaska, is a board member for the Cascadia Green Building Council, coauthor of the Anchorage Sustainable Building Initiative, and is the Alaska Chapter President Elect for the Council of Educational Facility Planners international (CEFPI).
Katrina Shum Miller
Principal, Green building Services, Inc. With 20 years of project experience in the US, New Zealand, and Malaysia, Kattrina possesses an extensive knowledge of high performance building design, construction and operations. She leads eco-charrettes, facilitates green building strategies meetings, workshops and research efforts in bio-climatic green building design, energy and water efficiency, alternative technologies, green products, commissioning, and sustainable operations. She is currently the lead sustainability consultant for several key projects including numerous K-12 and higher educational projects. Projects of note include the Portland Community College Newberg Center (seeking LEED platnum), da Vinci Arts MS High Performance Classroom (LEED Platnum), Skagit Valley College Science and Allied Health Building (LEED Platnum). As a former member of the USGBC LEED for Schools Core Committee, she was actively involved first-hand with the development of the LEED for Schools for New Construction Rating system. She has presented at various regional, national and international conferences (such as AIA, CEFPI, GreenBuild, World SB08 Conference), frequently teaches workshops, and also serves as USGBC faculty.
