Overview:

The contractor’s role during the Living Buildings Challenge (LBC) process should be a pro-active and involved one. The challenge is how to build “ideas” in to “reality”. The new Visitors Centre at VanDusen Botanical Gardens is one of the first buildings in Canada to be targeting LBC. Marsha Gentile will highlight for you the contractor’s role in the successful delivery of LBC projects. Rebecca McDiarmid, the Project Manager will tour the site with all attendee’s and explain the building and our approach to the many unique challenges and opportunities that arose during the preconstruction and construction phases of this project. A panel of project experts will then be available for a question period.

As part of the Safety Rules for construction sites, please note that attendee's will be visiting active construction sites and should therefore come suitably dressed, i.e.
  • No open toed / open shoes, runners or high heels
  • All footwear must be closed flat soled leather or equivalent shoes or boots preferably
  • Ledcor will ensure the areas of the site are delineated.  All visitors will need to attend a site orientation prior to access to the site.

Learning Objectives:

1.The role a contractor plays in the whole Living Building process. We see the contractor’s role to be a pro-active and very involved one.

2. Explain Ledcor’s role: We believe trust is the foundation of every successful project. Our teams develop this trust through open communication with the projects partners. Our communication style is a proactive, progressive, innovative and collaborative one, allowing us to quickly gain an understanding of the projects challenges and the owner’s objectives and commitments.

3. Contractor’s contribution is spending time going over the drawings, becoming part of the project.

4. Everyone needs to be involved as a “team” for a successful Living Building.

5. Cover the issues faced with the VanDusen project.

6. The process VanDusen went through, the delivery options, lessons learned.

7. Our role as Construction Manager at Risk.

8. A case study approach to the VanDusen Project.

9. How building specifications need to be managed by the Construction Manager.

10.Prior knowledge of process is an asset.

11. Design-build aspects of the VanDusen building.
