Coming to Portland on September
25th-26th and to Seattle on October 4th-5th, this innovative conference
is the premier event for integrating green practices into all types of

professionals from the realms of civil, electrical, structural and
mechanical engineering. Through technical trainings and workshops,
attendees will be equipped with sufficient technical knowledge of green
engineering practices, and will subsequently be empowered to integrate
those practices into the holistic design process. The conference will
feature keynote speaker Steven Strong, TIME magazine’s 1999 environmental "Hero for the Planet," in Seattle. In Portland Gary Christensen, the developer behind the landmark LEED Platinum rated Banner Bank Building will keynote.

Green Building Grants in King County
King County has extended the application deadline for green building grants for projects seeking LEED certification to October 1, 2007. Private, nonprofit, and public projects in King County outside the City of Seattle are eligible to apply. The grant provides funding of $15,000 to $25,000, depending on the LEED certification level that the project achieves. While compliance with LEED principles produces a net savings over the lifespan of a facility, the funds are intended to help offset the up-front costs, such as added early design or modeling costs, plus LEED registration and certification fees. Building Materials Reuse Calculator
This free downloadable software program estimates the environmental benefits of salvaging and reusing building materials, rather than buying and installing new ones. The calculator measures the environmental benefits of reusing building materials in terms of ten avoided negative environmental impacts (global warming, acidification, eutrophication, fossil fuel depletion, water intake, criteria air pollutants, ecological toxicity, human health, ozone depletion, smog) and in terms of the embodied energy that the materials contain, which is preserved when the materials are reused.
