Ralph Dinola serves as a green building consultant and project manager on numerous LEED™ registered projects. He has extensive experience with the LEED documentation process and the costs associated with green building. He also assists in conceptual design for green building strategies, green product specifications, and project feasibility studies, as well as plan and specification analysis for projects seeking LEED certification. Ralph specializes in green building workshops, the facilitation of eco-charrettes, as well as delivering the LEED Advanced Training Workshop as a LEED Advanced Faculty member. Ralph has over 10 years of experience as a designer and historic preservation specialist. He was project manager for LEED documentation for the Ecotrust Natural Capital Center, the first LEED Gold certified historic renovation in the U.S. He was also instrumental in developing LEED documentation for Viridian Place, the first LEED certified building in the Pacific NW. While working as a historic preservation specialist with the National Park Service (NPS), Ralph helped to preserve and restore more than 50 architecturally significant structures. While at Roger Williams University, Ralph was also honored with the Historic Preservation Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement.

Richard Iredale, Vice-Chair, Partner, Iredale Group Architecture, Victoria, British Columbia

In practice since 1989 and a partner of the firm since 1992, Richard Iredale’s design work includes cultural, municipal, residential, and educational facilities.  As both a Registered Architect and a Professional Engineer, Richard’s training and background provide him with a multifaceted skill set: He brings an architect’s vision and an engineer’s analysis to designing structures that are in harmony with nature and self-sustaining in energy and water use, thus conserving natural resources. Deeply committed to combating climate change, Richard’s work focuses on creating community buildings that clean, rather than pollute, their environment. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional and an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Canada Green Building Council.

Jason Twill

Jason S. Twill - Senior Project Manager, Sustainability, Vulcan Inc

Currently managing sustainability initiatives at Vulcan Inc., Jason has over a decade of experience in the areas of construction management, architecture, and urban planning. His work includes research and implementation of portfolio-wide resource conservation measures, developing investment strategies for alternative energy and water systems, and advocacy work for policies that support environmentally conscious design. Jason earned a masters degree in real estate finance and development from New York University and is a trained climate change communicator for the city of Seattle. Jason also serves on the steering committee for Real Estate Leadership in the Age of Climate Change at the Garrison Institute, a think tank which explores climate adaptive strategies for the real estate industry. Jason is the father of two boys and spends his spare time wandering the mountains with his family.

Tom's passion for over 25 years has been to deliver high performance, healthy building solutions that provide triple bottom line value. An author of numerous published papers and journal articles and a frequent speaker, Tom has a diverse technical background that underpins his current mechanical sustainable design focus and helps foster the integrative thinking such work demands. As Managing Director of WSP Flack + Kurtz's Seattle office, he is proud to be a member of a practice dedicated to providing integrated high performance building solutions. Tom is a member of the USGBC/ASHRAE/IESNA jointly sponsored technical Committee that recently published the first ANSI-accredited high performance green building standard. The USGBC’s goal for this standard perfectly aligns with Tom’s aspiration to help bring sustainable building practices into the mainstream. Also active locally, Tom is currently a member of the city of Seattle's Living Building Pilot Technical Advisory Group and is a contributing speaker for Cascadia's Transformational Lecture Series.


jbimage1Johanna Brickman, Manager, Sustainable Built Environment Program/Oregon BEST

Johanna leads development of the Oregon BEST Sustainable Built Environment Program, including prioritization of research and investment agendas to achieve economic strength in Oregon. She leads the Oregon BEST Sustainable Built Environment Research Consortium, assembles applied research teams, acts as a liaison to complementary regional and national organizations, and serves as an advocate to policy makers, industry and university partners, nonprofits and the media.  Prior to joining Oregon BEST, Johanna served for nine years as Associate Partner and Director of Sustainability at ZGF Architects, a nationally-recognized architecture, interiors, and urban design firm. At ZGF, Johanna provided experienced leadership to the firm’s Sustainable Design Team. She has become a respected consultant and presenter on issues of sustainable design.  Johanna’s passion for sustainable built environments extends to volunteer efforts with non-profit advocacy, including two terms as an elected board member of the International Living Future Institute (parent organization of Cascadia Green Building Council, Living Building Challenge, and The Natural Step US). In April 2011, Johanna completed a year term as the Chair of the Board of the Directors.

Clark Brockman is Director of SERA Architects' Sustainability Resource Team. He has over 25 years of architectural experience. Technically oriented and an excellent communicator, he particularly enjoys facilitating and participating in group processes whether they are related to projects or policy. He is involved with many of SERA's LEED and Living Building projects while also working to promote sustainability. Clark is a frequent lecturer and panel participant on green building process and policy, and the connections between buildings and climate change. Clark is past chair of the Cascadia Region Green Building Council Board of Directors, founding board member of the International Living Building Institute, and serves on The Oregon Natural Step’s Advisory Board. In 2008 he served as the co-chair of the Governor’s Energy Efficiency Legislative Workgroup. He also serves in a green building advisory capacity to the City of Portland’s Office of Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Commission, the Portland Development Commission, Multnomah and Clackamas Counties, the Oregon University System, Oregon's Office of the Governor and Federal Congressman David Wu’s office.

Mark is the founder and director of 2020 ENGINEERING located in Bellingham, Washington. He
is a registered professional civil engineer, author, and inventor. Mark conceived and developed the
concept of Wholistic Engineering, which provides an integrated “problem solving” approach that
considers all issues and possible conditions related to the development of a project, such as: laws & regulations, social concerns, politics, special interests, economic & environmental issues,
technology, and resources. 2020’s sustainable and low impact designs include porous pavements
and raingardens, rainwater harvesting systems, ecologically based wastewater treatment & water
reuse systems, and material recycling and composting facilities. 2020 ENGINEERING has provided Master Planning, Engineering Design, and/or Construction Management assistance on over 100 LEED, LID and other sustainable type projects, including Living Building Challenge projects, in many parts of the USA and Canada. Mark is a frequent author for various publications and a speaker at sustainable and LID conferences and workshops.

Mark Frankel has been consulting on sustainable design and energy efficiency for 20 years, encompassing a broad range of technical topics, including building and site design, energy use, occupant health, daylighting, high performance mechanical systems, stormwater management, efficient irrigation strategies, and others. This work has included extensive evaluation of comparative life cycle costs for a range of public and private development models. Mark has consulted on hundreds of capital projects, ranging in scale from single and multi-family residential projects to large commercial office buildings all over the country. Prior to joining NBI, Mark worked as a Senior Consultant on sustainable design at Paladino and Co. in Seattle, and as a Consultant on energy efficiency at Ecotope Inc, in Seattle. At NBI, Mark is responsible for the development of technical publications, training material, and program development to support the incorporation of energy efficiency strategies in new commercial construction. NBI works with utilities, government agencies, and other organizations all over the country to research and promote energy efficiency strategies in buildings.

Jason GamacheJason Gamache, Sustainability Coordinator, McCool Carlson Green Architects, Anchorage, Alaska

Sustainability Coordinator and Project Architect for McCool Carlson Green Architects, has been serving the community in Alaska for several years as a volunteer through various professional and non profit affiliations. He is dedicated to helping educate the community on building greener and the implementation of sustainable building strategies. Jason helped coauthor the Anchorage Building Initiative/ Ordinance and has also represented Alaska in Washington DC as a Congressional Advocate, lobbying for supporting sustainable communities. Jason is experienced in the development of sustainable buildings, notably Alaska’s first two LEED certified Schools and is the founding chair of Alaska’s Green Schools Advocacy Committee. Beginning in the late 1990’s, he spent much time in Europe, studying and working with some of Europe’s foremost sustainable designers. Jason helped develop projects which implemented sustainable building principles of “Cybernetics + Structure.” Since graduating from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor in Architecture, he has been working to develop sustainable buildings throughout Alaska.


Faith Graham

General Counsel, Clean Energy Works Oregon, Portland, Oregon

Faith Graham has facilitated commercial real estate and sustainability projects, including renewable energy and conservation measures, with a particular emphasis on complex acquisitions, joint venture and finance transactions for more than a decade. Immediately prior to joining Clean Energy Works Oregon as general counsel, Faith was a partner at the law firm of Roberts Kaplan, LLP and assisted businesses and individuals with a broad spectrum of real property matters, including ownership structuring, acquisitions, financing, entitlements, incentives, property management, joint venture concerns, leasing and dispositions. Faith is a LEED Accredited Professional and co-founded the Cascadia Portland Branch, Green Building Interest Group. Faith is active in the community on a number of fronts including as the Board Chairperson of Oregon Children’s Theatre. She holds a B.A. from the University of Washington and received her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law.

Emmanuel currently leads a double professional life. He is a Mechanical Engineer for Reevolution Consulting, a small firm he founded dedicated to green building design and consulting located in Kelowna, British Columbia. He has also embarked on a new venture with BlueGreen Living Communities, a startup firm providing an innovative real estate development delivery model which focuses on building true Community. Emmanuel spent 5 years with Stantec Consulting in Kelowna prior to discovering his true passion resided in the smaller, nimbler and highly responsive ecosystem of small business. Emmanuel’s engineering expertise includes energy audits and studies, high efficiency mechanical systems design as well as LEED coordination and consulting. Recently, he has been actively pursuing the responsibilities associated with land acquisitions, community building and marketing, as well as project cost budgeting for what will be the first Living Community in the interior of BC. Having co-founded the Thompson-Okanagan branch of Cascadia, Emmanuel acted as a co-chair for this branch for a period of 4 years. He has been and remains very active in the local green building professional industry through volunteer work with the branch as well as education and outreach programs to local private and public organizations. A care and respect for nature runs deep in his values. When not worried about the next paycheck, Emmanuel can be found skiing, hiking and paragliding through the beautiful mountains of British Columbia.

Dale Mikkelsen is the Manager of Planning and Sustainability for the UniverCity Project at Simon Fraser University –  a community being developed around “Four Cornerstones of Sustainability”, including Environment, Equity, Education, and Economy.  Dale was formerly the lead project planner for the 2010 Athlete’s Village for the City of Vancouver, and acted as the City’s Green Building Planner.  Dale has a graduate degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia.  He is a board member for the Cascadia Chapter of the Canadian and US Green Building Council, and sits on the British Columbia Green Building Round Table.  Dale is a father of 2 wonderful little kids, and tries to live an active and sustainable lifestyle as a model for his children.

ML VidasML (Mary Louise) Vidas, Principal, Sustainable Design Services, Bend, Oregon

ML (Mary Louise) Vidas is founder and principal consultant for Sustainable Design Services.  Her core business concept evolved from an understanding that integrated design requires balance, and, that balance is an active endeavor.  The best work comes from the dynamic balance between engineering and architecture, between functionality and aesthetics, between the practical and the sublime.  In the realm of sustainability, structures must be resource efficient, ecologically sound and promote human well-being.  Sustainable Design Services provides Living Building Challenge support, LEED documentation, charrette facilitation and green building training.  ML has developed green building training for Native American communities that is currently being offered throughout North America.  ML has coordinated the Sustainable Building Advisor course at Central Oregon Community College (Bend, OR) since 2007 and recently launched the course in Boise.  ML is an Oregon Registered Architect, LEED AP BD+C, and a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor.  She grew up in North Carolina in a passive solar home that her parents enjoyed for over fifty years.  When her children were young, she had the pleasure of taking them to story hour at the Mount Airy Public Library (designed by Ed Mazria).

As Gerding Edlen’s designated “green guy” since joining the firm in 1997, Dennis has encouraged increased environmental stewardship in development projects while building a strong business case for the economic and social benefits of environmental responsibility. Dennis’ responsibilities include launching Gerding Edlen Sustainable Solutions, a separate business entity committed to engaging strategies where building projects generate more energy than they consume and consume more waste than they produce. GESS is also working on several district scale distributed energy and waste management systems. He is also an active board member of the Natural Step Network, the Cascadia Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, the Oregon Built Environment & Sustainable Technologies Center (Oregon BEST) and Caldera, an arts and environment education program for at risk youth. Dennis is passionate about design as well, believing that it is an expression of man’s highest aspirations. He has more than 20 years of experience in urban planning and design, and has been active in construction and real estate development since 1967. He earned a degree in Architectural Engineering from Washington State University, as well as Master's degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning from the University of Pennsylvania.
