Donald’s academic and professional interest is in the field of “Sustainability” with particular focus on interrelationships amongst; urban development, the built /natural environment and the human/society interactions. Under his roles, as Program Head in Sustainable Urban Development, and Research Director of the Centre for Sustainable and Environmental Initiatives at the BC Institute of Technology, he has developed multiple applied research and academic programs aimed at accelerating sustainable urban development technologies and green building practices. Donald’s focus is the development of technical and academic innovations in a range of areas within sustainable building research and education, while working collaboratively with Industry, Government, and Academic stakeholders. Within his educational mandate, Donald is responsible in developing interdisciplinary academic sustainability education programs focused on transforming BCIT’s annual student enrolment of 48,000 students and industry training. As Research Director, under the Centre’s activities is the collaborative building, academic, and research project; the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS). Donald’s roles within this project, through his position as Co-Chair is to further knowledge, develop interdisciplinary/inter-institutional collaboration and research on sustainable building, design, education, training and operations, in advancing regenerative building principles. In practice, as principal of Urban Solutions Architecture, Donald has professionally practiced, and employed sustainability in building design and environmental land-use planning. Through-out practice and in application, Donald has employed creative problem solving through the “multi-disciplinary / integrated design” team approach on a variety of projects with a range of client types.


 Since establishment in 1997, architectural practice is oriented towards ecologically sustainable practices and design, promoting green building through built examples.  Demonstrated academic and institutional leadership at the BC Institute of Technology as Program Head for Sustainable Urban Development and research Director for the Centre for Sustainable and Environmental Initiatives conducting numerous sustainability programs and projects.  Conducted international sustainability applied research and applied education within the Asia-Pacific region.


 Member of the Vancouver LEED User Group, (VLUG) education committee  Assisted the Vancouver Chapter of Emerging Green Builders with workshop, and lecture events located at GNWC, and provided logistical and financial support through my affiliation at BCIT  Member of CaGBC through BCIT’s affillation  Attended CaGBC conferences & completed LEED Training Workshop


 As a “practitioner-based” academic, who has attained professional education in BC, and Oregon, and is a registered Architect in both the State of Washington, and the Province of BC, provides a regional “Cascadian” perspective and outlook through experience.  Academic focus on applied Sustainability education and research, provides practical understanding and experience in moving complex educational initiatives and programs forward in a multi-stakeholders environment, inclusive of students, faculty, institutional leaders, and other stakeholders.  Professional practice provides understanding and concerns from the practitioner’s perspective and concerns in “green building” and professional training.


 To further sustainability and green building into the practices of society and promote LEED adoption.
