I have no professional affiliations other than to LEED and the CGBC.

No

My experience in green building is directly related to my own company's development and construction activities. At present we have two urban infill residential projects which are being designed to LEED for Homes GOLD/Platinum standards. Each project has explored overall design and sustainability issues though an integrated design process. Atypical to the large majority of relatively small townhome and condo developments, (ours are 7 and 14 unit respectively) we have brought on board a complete design team including mechanical, energy, and building envelope professionals to best examine and establish best practices for each building type. In this process I have set, I believe, significantly high standards regarding both LEED rating targets as well as established additionally substantive criteria related to distinctive aethetics, year round functionality for outdoor spaces, copious vegetation (site and region appropriate), rainwater harvesting, water celebration features, and the significant reduction to elimination of PBTs, VOCs, Heavy Metals, and other . Additionally I have committed my projects to FSC lumber and have started working to help expand the local FSC distribution channels by taking the time to understand the FSC certification process and supply side issues and then doing outreach to local users in an effort to increase volumes and make the case to wholesalers to engage in this nascent yet vital market. As developer and builder I engage in green building on the design, construction, and marketing end of things and this exposure has both increased my interest in theoretical and practical issues as well as made evident how far shy we are/I am from putting it all together in one building or project.

I believe I demonstrate leadership by committing myself to carry through, in holistic manner, the principles to which guide my projects. Its one thing to think and talk about designing or building green. Its another thing in my opinion to personally edcuate onself both philosophically and technically and then act on what you have learned in the maelstrom of personalities, interests, beliefs, and risks that dominate the industry. I think I lead by being transparent in my focus and intentions and by refusing to be "reasonable" when it would be much easier to defer and do so. I think my projects reflect this leadership and in the end it seems they are a more useful guide to my leadership capabilities.

I have had no previous experince w/ CGBC or other such organisations.

I dont know that my qualifications are necessarily that unique. I think perhaps my diligence and willingness to contribute most noticeably offer contribution value. I think my background also provides a perspective that may be of use to the organisation. I am educated in the humanities, have traveled and lived extensively abroad, yet non-intuitively I love craft and blue collar physical work. I worked as a labourer up to a position of construction project manager for large mixed use developments, then grew my own developemnt firm. I think this experience and career trajectory has well prepared me to think holistically about built environment issues with an eye on the integration of multiple perspectives. If nothing else I think I can provide a perpective that is cross disciplinary, international, and committed to the implementation in the field of both design and construction excellence.

I simply want to learn, contribute, and engage on a consistent basis with those committed to addressing the major built environment issues of our time and place. I feel CGBC is progressively addressing these issues and I's like to be a part of that discussion and the eventual implementation.
