Energy in architecture and planning has been by passion for my entire professional life. I have been on the cutting edge of energy conservation efforts since I started my own architectural firm specializing in passive solar design and energy conscience urban planning in 1976. I took a leadership role with the AIA and other local Portland organizations. See the specific experience items listed in this application. I continued my passion during my civil service career in the United States and Europe with a different focus on building and implementing energy and environmental related policy in new building design. For example, 1)I have required early LEED Silver rating requirements that exceed our Corporate standards. 2)I actively increase future Military Construction budgets to advance the LEED ratings. 3) Expert in Federal energy efficiency regulations, instructions and guidance. 4) I have been active with the Cascadia Tacoma LEED User Group over the last few years. I have presented the Navy’s High Performance Buildings at a recent forum.

Between 1976 and 1990 I was very active in the AIA national and local energy conservation activities. My architectural firm ‘Solarchitecture Planning PC’ was on the cutting edge of passive solar, daylighting, energy efficient urban planning, and community involvement. The list of activities weaves into the other sections of the application. A few of my qualification are: Member of the AIA Portand Chapter and National Energy Committee, and Chair of the Portland Energy Committee. Jury member for ASHRAE Portland Chapter Energy Awards program. Jury member for Bonneville Power Administration Energy Edge Design Review Board to select buildings to include in a demonstration program that would exceed current codes by 30%. Presenter at Passive Solar Energy Conferences in 1980’s Instructor for Passive Solar Design for two community colleges. In my current federal position I have been actively engaged in the policy and programming issues to improve the energy and environmental quality. I have been an active member in the Cascadia Tacoma LEED User Group in providing input on the new LEED 3.0, presenter for High Performance Buildings in DOD, and performed the initial review of the GreenBuild 2007 proposals. I have attended the last 3 GreenBuild Conferences and attend many training sessions including EQuest training, ASHRAE Standard 90.12004 for LEED certification, Succeed at LEED 2006 Workshop, and FEMP Energy Program Training.

My broad background in the technical areas of architecture, urban planning, energy conservation, and computer modeling are mixed with an active execution of LEED in new federal buildings and involvement with LEED related policy development with the federal government. Practical applications, policy development, and implementation need to mix together to implement solutions.

My picture says it all. I want to make a significant contribution to feed, grow and save our future generations. My passion is sustainability since 1976. As a member of Cascadia Board of Directors, I can apply my extensive background in the public and private sector to create and implement our mission. The green building movement is nearing a critical period as its grow continues at an accelerated pace. I have a vision of a seamless integrated green building growth while envisioning our long range goals. The Cascadia Chapter is proactive in implementing important programs during this transition and growth period. I look forward to improving our strategies and policies, finding solutions for our opportunities, and leading Cascadia to achieve its mission. I would be honored to represent the non I-5 corridor Cascadia members. As your representative, I will listen and respond to our special issues to address and incorporate into the Cascadia’s mission.
